On 5th July 2024, the students of Class II had a musical morning when the talented Music Department of DPS Surat continued the ongoing series of Parampara- a lecture demonstration series that seeks to instill cultural values and appreciation for Indian Classical music and dance in young minds. In this session, the students were enlightened with the fact that the seven swar (musical notes) are further classified as ‘Shuddha’ and ‘Vikrut’, making them 12 in number, unlike the common belief that the number of swars is seven.

The musical notes make the ‘Alankar’. Alankar, also known as the ‘ornamentation’ or ‘embellishment’ holds great significance in vocal and instrumental performances and is a base of Indian Classical music. The session aimed to introduce the students to the world of total number of musical notes and their role in music. The students gained an understanding of how they can be utilized to craft music. Witnessing the amazement, joy and satisfaction on the faces of young music lovers was truly enchanting.
