Class XII Psychology students from DPS Surat visited the Psychiatry Department of SMIMER (Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education & Research) on October 25, 2024 for an immersive clinical experience. The visit aimed to provide students with practical exposure to interdisciplinary mental healthcare, showcasing the roles of various professionals across outpatient, inpatient, and emergency psychiatry settings. The session began with an overview by a resident doctor, detailing the department’s structure and specialized units. The highlight of the visit was the Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) room, where doctors explained the procedure's application in treating severe mental conditions such as depression and bipolar disorder, emphasizing the importance of patient safety and ethical considerations.
The students also engaged in a Q&A session with Dr. Parag Shah, who addressed their questions about mental health care. He emphasized the significance of empathy, resilience, and active listening as essential skills for aspiring mental health professionals. His insights into ECT and other psychiatric procedures underscored the importance of teamwork in supporting mental health patients effectively.
