Indian Classical Music is a rich and ancient tradition that has evolved over thousands of years. Learning Indian Classical Music helps children connect with and appreciate our cultural heritage and create a sense of identity and pride. The students of Classes III and IV had a peep into this rich tradition on 6th July 2024 when the Music department hosted ‘Taal’, a part of the Parampara series. They first introduced the children to the basics of Indian classical music, explaining the difference between ‘Sur’ (melody) and ‘Taal’ (rhythm). They demonstrated how Taal is structured, with a special focus on the Tabla. A step-by-step demonstration of how to play tabla was given while introducing them to ‘Bol’– the syllables for different strokes. They also explored various Taals, including Dadra (6 beats), Rupak (7 beats), Keherva (8 beats) and Teentaal (16 beats), highlighting their unique uses in various genres of music. This session provided the students with a fascinating insight into the world of Indian classical music, enriching their minds, hearts and spirits, while preserving a timeless cultural legacy.
