The term ‘Saptak’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘sapta,’ meaning seven. In Indian classical music, ‘Saptak’ refers to an octave, which is a sequence of seven notes and it encompasses the seven basic swaras (notes) that form the foundation of Indian classical music. The students of Classes V and VI had a wonderful musical morning on 15th June 2024 when the DPS Surat Music department explained the nuances of Saptak, the notes, the octaves and how they can be combined to create music. These 7 notes: Shadja, Rishabha, Gandhara, Panchama, Dhaivata and Nishada, alongwith the three octaves – Mandra, Madhya and Tara Saptaks were explained in detail to the students.
How musicians traverse through these octaves and create different musical expressions was also depicted to them. They were also given in-depth knowledge about the signs of the Saptak. The students were engrossed in learning and understanding these building blocks of Music.
