At DPS Surat, an online session led by renowned herpetologist Gerard Martin aimed to educate Class V students about snakes was held from 29th April to 1st May 2024. Various topics such as identifying poisonous and non-poisonous species, administering first aid for snakebites and dispelling common myths about these reptiles were covered in detail.
Martin commenced by introducing the diverse world of snakes, emphasizing their ecological significance and survival adaptations. The students learned to differentiate between venomous and non-venomous snakes, grasping their distinguishing features and behaviors. They also learnt to identify common venomous snakes found in our region through engaging visual aids. Gerard stressed caution and respect when encountering snakes, urging students to appreciate their ecological role while maintaining a safe distance.
A critical aspect of the session was educating students on first aid for snakebites. Martin outlined immediate steps post-bite, stressing calmness and prompt medical attention. Students were encouraged to share this knowledge with family and peers for emergency preparedness. He also debunked prevalent myths, providing scientific explanations to foster a more accurate perception of snakes. Interactive elements like quizzes and virtual demonstrations engaged students, promoting active participation and collaborative learning.
