Delhi Public School Surat was privileged to host the Inter DPS National Chess Championship for Girls (Open) 2016 from 5th to 7th May. The opening ceremony on 5th May was held at DPS Surat Sports complex. Mr. P. Vamshi Krishna the Principal of DPS Surat and The Chief Arbiter Mr. A. C. Joshi hoisted the DPS Society flag. The Chief Guest for the event was Mr. Pawan Kumar, the Secretary of Nalanda Education Society. The participating Delhi Public Schools were from Allahabad, Chandigarh, Chindwada, Duliajan, Gurgaon, Nagpur, Noida, Navi Mumbai, R. K. Puram, Yamunapuram Bulandshahr, Tapi and Surat. The programme commenced with the lighting of the lamp to lend an auspicious start to the event followed by administering the oath to the participants, judges and managers. The Principal in his welcome address stated that Chess is a game of vision and intelligence that teaches patience, sacrifice and compromise. The Chief guest Mr. Pawan Kumar declared the meet open.
The International badminton player and Arjuna awardee Ms. Jwala Gutta graced the event with her presence and motivated all to take sports seriously as a great career option. The most exciting event of the day was a dream come true for all the chess players, when a simultaneous match was played with the Chief Guest for the day, the International Master Mr. Vikramaditya Kulkarni (International ranking 2266).
The Valedictory Ceremony on 7th May took place at “Arena”, DPS Surat sports complex. FIDE International Master Mr. Vikramaditya Kulkarni addressed the gathering and motivated the participants to play well and win fame and acclaim at the National and International levels. The final tally of results saw DPS R. K. Puram as the winner followed by DPS Gurgaon and DPS Bopal. Saanya Mahesh and Eesha Shekhar of R.K. Puram were declared as the champions of the tournament. The winners were given trophies in various categories. The 3-day tournament successfully ended with the fulfillment of the aim to give the right kind of platform to passionate sports players and instil in them the correct approach and attitude so that sports is well promoted in our country.
