Vigyan Prasar and Film Society of Surat organized a three day workshop at DPS Surat from 22 October to 24 October 2016. The main objective of the workshop was to teach the participants varying from students to film makers of Surat the power of Visual communication in the field of Science and technology. The workshop covered almost every aspect of film making from script to screen, ranging from handling the camera, editing, titling, adding elements to film to make it more appealing to the viewers like cartoons, graphics and finally the aesthetic presentation of short films. The second day of the workshop started with the group leaders giving a brief description of the themes taken by the group of participants for the making of the short film. This was followed by lectures of the experts in the field of film making. Dr. C. M. Nautiyal, Chairman of Young Scientists Schemes elaborated on the various steps in film production from script to screen followed by a presentation by Mr. Ritesh Taksande, Director of My First Film Organisation, on fine techniques of filmmaking. Mr. NareshKapadia the chief faculty in College of Performing Arts, Surat added a few interesting tips on how to act in front of a camera. The session also included discussion of scripts, teaching, editing procedures using NCH software etc. The final day of the workshop started with a movie explaining technical effects followed by discussion of the final script. Later hands on session was conducted, where the groups did shooting, acting, voiceover and editing to make the short film. The screening of the short films prepared by the participants excited them very much. All the groups enthusiastically participated and put up wonderful efforts. The three day workshop concluded with the valedictory function, and all the participants were awarded with certificates. In order to highlight the idea of communication of science through motion pictures, a special screening of the Biography of the great Indian Mathematician, Ramanujan was done at Valentine Multiplex at 7pm on 22 October 2016.The workshop was open to all the budding young film enthusiasts and students from various schools of Surat who are interested in communicating science through visual medium. Apart from the resource persons, Dr. R. Gopichandran, Director of VigyanPrasar, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, Mr. NimeshKapoor, Scientist and Head of Science Films division, VigyanPrasar, all the members of Film Society of Surat, Mr. Sivakumar, Director DPS Surat and Tapi & Mr. P. Vamshi Krishna, Principal, Delhi Public School Surat graced the occasion with their presence.
